We will provide unbiased opinion and numerous anecdotes to describe the people who have made the trip a memorable experience.
Please read and enjoy.
The good:
Ha (aka Tony). Despite his name, this man is no joke. Mr Tony, the director at the Sea Pearl hotel and restaurant in Cat Ba town is a deserving winner. He helped to organise local tours with fishermen, and even offered to 'shoot' the tour company if they tried to scam us.
Jeff... Jeff hails from France, near Strasbourg. He's working for a few months at the Sea Pearl as Tony's right hand man. He welcomed our many questions and helped to arrange numerous activities. Turns out he's quite a juggler and a demon on the Fussball table!
The family at Trung Hoa hotel. They were a lovely family who ran our hotel. They didn't mind numerous late night arrivals on New Year's Eve and even washed our clothes by hand.
The Lan Ha Bay fisherman. He gave a great tour and was the warmest host one could imagine.
Honorable Mention:
Vietnam Airlines. Because they weren't as bad as the reviews!
The most unfortunate:
A fat guy (nicknamed 'Herr Grossman') who managed to fall into the river shin deep when attempting to disembark a metal riverboat.
The idiot:
Tie: Luke and the fat man. It turns out Luke (mentioned in the blog entry 'Cat Ba island and NYE') was a verbose & annoying American. The kind of guy who works in the Tech sector and drinks lattes. His friend (the fat man) was patronising and rude. I bet he votes Republican. We met Luke on the beach and he kindly introduced us to the fat man at dinner. None of our group (Sha, Huong, Tom, or I) had a chance to speak.
